To perform a sortie means to leave one context and entering another. By looking at the theatric sortie (french for exit), actor and director Iggy Malmborg will explore - in his own unique way - questions of endings, escape and flight, in a performance that draws parallels between the theatre and the mechanisms of everyday life, in a both hilarious and terrifying way.
Is it possible to leave instead of accepting the circumstances? And what happens when you are forced to flee? Most of all, Sortistycken will not focus on the desire of going elsewhere but the itchy need of escaping existence as a whole, the binding presence of the I to itself.
The piece consists of two radically different acts, a so-called performance lecture and a classic chamber play. And in a twilight zone between abuse and tenderness, between the adorable and offensive is where the story of Mammis, Pappis and Grabben is played out. Three characters who in different ways try to get out, away. From what? To where? And what if there is nothing out there? Perhaps we are riveted to our current situation without somewhere to escape to. Then the dream of another, better elsewhere is nothing but a restorative apparatus that is keeping us in place.
The cast includes Iggy Malmborg himself, as well as Mia Höglund-Melin and Jesper Söderblom from the theatre’s ensemble. Sortistycken is the final part of a series of plays that have achieved international success. Sortistycken had its world premiere at Schauspiel Leipzig on June 19 and has been presented at the Tampere Theatre Festival in Finland. Following its Swedish premiere, it will continue on tour.
